How to Care For Winter Coats

FGC

Winter is coming and it is time to unpack those heavier coats you have had in storage all summer. Check out these tips to bring them back to life and care for your coats through the winter season.

It All Starts With Proper Cleaning

One of the key steps when it comes to making sure that your Winter coat not only looks great but also lasts for years to come is to ensure it is properly cleaned. The best course of action is to take it to a professional dry cleaner as they will know exactly how to care for your garment depending on the fabric. You may wish to do this at the start of the Winter season if your coat has spent the summer months stored in an attic, basement or garage just to make sure it is fresh and clean. If you are unable to take your coat to a professional cleaner for any reason, you will want to follow the cleaning instructions on the label carefully to avoid damaging your coat.

Choose The Right Coat Hanger

Believe it or not, the type of hanger you choose for your coat matters a great deal! For the majority of winter coats, a sturdy wooden hanger is the best option. Coats are heavy garments and they need a supportive hanger to help them maintain their shape.

Don’t Forget to Brush!

It is a good idea to get into the habit of brushing your coat with a lint roller or clothes brush after each wear. Suede brushes can be a good choice as they will help to wick away any stains and oils. The ideal coat brushing kit to keep on hand should include a lint roller, a cloth brush, and a wool comb.

Keep It Fresh!

Unlike most of our clothing, winter coats cannot just be put through the washer regularly to keep it fresh. As noted above, brushing regularly will take care of most dirt and debris on the surface of the coat, but if you feel it is smelling less than fresh then hanging it in fresh air rather than in a closet will help the air to circulate and disperse any odors.
